President Obama allocated some $3 million in funds for possible use to preserve the internment camps used to imprison Japanese-Americans and other Asian and Pacific Islanders during World War II.

The funds, released in his annual budget, as reported by The News of Cumberland County, are part of the Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, chaired by Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.). The Japanese American Citizens League is petitioning the body to continue funding the preservation of these camps as part of its educational outreach.

If the funds are again granted to Camp Preservation Appropriations, it will be divvied up between applicable groups for help in preserving this piece of American history.
