It’s an adventurous edition of Friday Features, as this week sees the release of both The Expendables 2 and ParaNorman. But don’t worry, we grade the other Hollywood new release films making their way to theaters, scoring them on their Asian-American presence, or lack thereof. ParaNorman follows the exploits of Norman, who can communicate with the dead. This animated film is from Portland, Ore., based Laika Entertainment, where one of my Asian-American friends works as a mold maker. Congrats!

Whitney Houston’s final film before she died, Sparkle follows Jordin Sparks as she rises to stardom as part of a girl group, only to be battered with the problems that come with fame.

I suppose it is odd that a boy should sprout leaves from his legs, which is exactly where Timothy Green finds himself after a couple buries a box of their wishes in the back yard. Jennifer Garner stars.
